The Effect of Mulching Material on the Shoot and Root Growth and Fruit Quality of ¢¥ Fuji ¢¥ / M.26 Apple

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to select the effective mulching material in apple orchard in Kyongbuk area in 1998. Woven polypropylene, black P.E. film, rice straw and thermal blanket as mulching materials, and clean cultivation as control were used for this experiment. Shoot growth was increased in the plots of black P.E. film and woven polypropylene mulch in the late growing season. There were no differences on the longitudinal growth of fruit by mulching materials, but the lowest growth of fruit diameter showed in the plot of black P.E. film. Mulching with black P.E. film produced poor fruits compared other treatments. Water potential of soil was remained at high level in clean cultivation during growing season and rapidly increased in woven polypropylene mulch at the late of growing season, but black P.E. film and thermal blanket mulch showed low level of soil water potential through out the growing season. The soil resistance was the highest in clean cultivation. Roots were developed well on the surface of the soil with the thermal blanket mulch. Sixty-five percentage and 71% of roots were located at 0-20 §¯ depth of soil in the treatments of thermal blanket and black P.E. film mulch, respectively.
